MEANING

Government land given free to the landless poor for cultivation or house sites — with a permanent bar on selling it.

Assignment ("lavani") carries the condition of non-alienation under the Telangana Assigned Lands (Prohibition of Transfers) Act 1977 (the POT Act). Purchases of assigned land are void; resumption and restoration cases are steady revenue work.
