From Hyderabad State to Telangana: the political lineage
Telangana was the Telugu heart of the Nizam's Hyderabad State until the 1948 Police Action brought it into India. In 1956 it was merged into Andhra Pradesh over a Gentlemen's Agreement whose breach fuelled the 1969 agitation and the 2001–2014 movement, until the AP Reorganisation Act 2014 made Telangana a state on 2 June 2014. That lineage is why your land-revenue law is dated 1317 Fasli, why old records are in Urdu, and why 2 June anchors half the deadlines you will apply.

Who keeps the village record: the revenue system from Salar Jung to Bhu Bharati
Salar Jung's reforms gave Hyderabad districts, taluks, survey settlement and the ryotwari system; the 1317F Land Revenue Act codified it; the patwari kept the village record until 1980s abolition; mandals replaced taluks in 1985–86; VROs kept the record until 2020, when Dharani abolished both enquiry and keeper; Bhu Bharati (2025) restored enquiry, village accounts and a new keeper — the Grama Palana Officer.

The land-reform statutes: one story, six laws, and files that never close
Between 1949 and 1977 six waves of reform dismantled Hyderabad's landed order: jagir abolition and sarf-e-khas merger (1949), the Tenancy Act 1950 with its protected tenants (38-E), inams abolition (1955), the 1973 land ceiling, assignment of government land with the POT Act 1977 bar on transfer, and Bhoodan. None of these is finished — each still generates live files, because each created rights and restrictions that sit in today's record.

How Telangana got its map: taluks, mandals and the 33 districts
Telangana entered statehood in 2014 with ten districts inherited from Hyderabad State and the AP years. On 11 October 2016 they were split into 31 (33 by 2019), with new divisions and mandals, to bring administration closer to people. As of 2026 the map reads: 33 districts, 74 revenue divisions, ~594 mandals. Records are keyed to the village and survey number, so reorganisation moved jurisdictions and files — not the record itself.
